Oh to be a Duck

The second 36×36″ painting from the pond series, Summer Morning – Oh to be a Duck,  looks at  the complexity of growth on a pond and the interrupted, subtle reflections that happen on the surface. The patterning of the duckweed and pond scum  is, in itself, quite abstract. The challenge is in layering the abstract patterns, keeping the sense of perspective and atmosphere, and giving a suggestion of the subsurface – all good excuses for some intricate color layerings and glazes. The meditative quiet of the early morning scene is sustained by all the slowly zigzagging horizontals and close tones. A few old oak leaves, caught in the scum, provide the telling detail that helps “ground” the piece. Enjoy!
