To look at reflections of spun gold leaves in autumn is to steal a stare into the sun. The glow and warmth are seductive, in part due to its brevity. We want to absorb as much warmth as possible, and keep it locked inside us for the duration of winter. We need the heat, but we can’t live without the spark of joy it offers. Perhaps the pond feels the same way. Perhaps that’s why it holds onto the glow for as long as possible. And let’s me enjoy it too.
